This is the second pair of these Sennheiser PXC250 headphones I've purchased. On a recent trip to the Far East I discovered at the airport that I'd left my old Sennheiser travel headphones at home. I reluctantly paid £80+ for a pair of PXC250 at Currys duty-free shop, a good move as the same pair in Frankfurt airport and Hong Kong were £160. They don't have quite the same range as my original travel headphones, but they do have an effective noise cancelling feature, great not only for in aircraft use, but for anywhere there is a constant background noise. They don't eliminate all background noise but do reduce it to the point at which it becomes unnoticeable.

The noise reduction system and volume booster uses a AAA battery which has a fairly short life, I used 4 on a four week vacation. The headphones can be used without the battery, but the volume level is quite low and of course there would be no noise cancelling without battery power.

The headphones, aaa battery and aircraft adapter come in a small good quality padded carry case. There is a simple instruction booklet.

This pair is for my wife, who covets my pair. I had intended buying them on my next trip through Birmingham Airport until I saw that Amazon offered them at the same price. Highly recommended.

I bought a pair of these to try to make working in a noisy crowded office more tolerable.

      My conclusions so far:
      - Air conditioning noise, computer fan noise: very effective at screening out this low frequency noise.
      - Talking, shouting: partially effective at screening this out, particularly with co-workers with deep voices.
      - Crisp packet rustling, cereal-bowl scraping: not very effective at blocking this noise:
      - Coin sorting: not very effective at blocking this noise.
      - Farting, burping, yawning: moderately effective at blocking this noise.
      - Sneezing, coughing: not very effective at blocking this noise.

It's still necessary to play music through the headphones in order to effectively exclude most human-created office noises.
Because they sit on top of the ears, they are quite light and comfortable, but larger headphones that completely enclose the ear would probably block sound more effectively.

      Good points:

      - Nice compact size and with a little practice are easily folded up and packed into a small bag, which also had a pocket for my IPod Nano 5th Gen.
      - Noise cancelling is quite good with no music on, with music on and noise cancel on you really can not hear anything around you
      - Very reasonable price tag

      Bad points:

      - My nano with the EQ set to Rock really did not seem to have enough power to drive these so I had to use no EQ to get the most out of the volume level, which then reduces the bass which was a shame. When the noise cancel is off the volume is very quiet so they can not really be used without the noise cancel on (which does not bother me, but I thought I should note it down)
      - Noise cancelling with music off is not great, its quite good. I have now purchased the Bose Quiet Comfort 15's which are astoundingly good with the noise cancellation, but not as practical in size.
      - The battery pack half way down the cable is very annoying when you are squashed on a train, I seemed to have to do a lot of fiddling about getting myself setup for my journey, sorting the cable, clipping on the battery pack under my tie which falls off when you are walking around.

I know this looks like more bad than good, but in overall performance they are not bad at all, I am now using them for my wifes IPad and I have the Bose in my ruck sack for going to work.

I bought these headphones as they promised not only portability, but also a high quality of sound. As a PRODUCT DESIGNER I was very disappointed and returned them the following day. Why?

      1. ERGONOMICS
While excellently made they have forgotten all about ergonomics. After about 20 minutes of wearing them I had pain around my ears and on the side of my head. A symptom of many on ear headphones which are simply scaled down over ear headphones. I struggle to understand why companies such as Sennheiser think that scaling down is sufficient. The padding on a bose truesound is incredible and makes it possible to wear for hours. But the rigid padding on the rim in combination with a high tension on the headband makes it uncomfortable, but as consumers have been told by companies that this is 'comfortable' they continue to buy them...

The other problem was the battery box for the noise cancelling. Placed halfway down the cord, I found it in the way all the time. Unless clipped it is too heavy, and when clipped it is annoying.

      2. FUNCTION
The cords are not replaceable at ALL. Yes there is a 2 year warranty but after? What am I meant to do?

Second is that the sound is horrible without the noise cancelling. So if you buy only expect maximum performance when it is on. This is a dangerous feature, as it may push people to use it in situations where they really shouldn't....

I am not an advocate of truesound bose either, they are very flimsy and I believe they have been made to break at the hinges after a year or so...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sennheiser PXC 250 II
Reviewed in Italy on 11 April 2011
Infine l'astuccio fornito in dotazione è veramente comodo.
